NanoHeal for Peripheral Artery Disease
Long-term vessel healing after PAD intervention
Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a common and debilitating condition caused by narrowing of the arteries supplying blood to the legs. Existing minimally invasive treatments use balloons and stents to reopen blocked vessels, but many patients develop repeat narrowing within the treated artery. Current devices rely on toxic chemotherapy drugs such as paclitaxel to temporarily suppress this process, but concerns remain regarding safety and durability.
Nanomedx is developing a novel catheter-based treatment designed to safely improve long-term vessel healing after PAD intervention. The technology combines:
- a proprietary nanoparticle platform developed in NSW that increases local retention of therapy within diseased blood vessels,
- a naturally occurring human anti-inflammatory biologic (interleukin-10) designed to promote healing and reduce vessel scarring, and
- a specialised balloon catheter that delivers the therapy directly to the treatment site during a standard angioplasty procedure.
Unlike conventional drug-eluting balloons and stents that rely on prolonged release of cytotoxic drugs, the Nanomedx system is designed to locally deliver a biologic to promote healthier vessel healing following angioplasty. The therapy is intended to be administered using a dedicated balloon catheter integrated into existing endovascular workflows, positioning the technology within the established class of catheter-based cardiovascular devices used routinely in PAD treatment.
